Computer Recycling for Healthcare Organizations
With over 2 million tons of electronics being discarded each year (EPA estimate), the technology revolution is causing a rapidly increasing burden on the environment. As members of the health care industry, medical personnel must recognize the impact disposed electronics can have, not only on the environment, but also on the public's well-being.
While electronic equipment is an invaluable tool and contains valuable resources, they also contain exorbitant amounts of hazardous materials, including lead, mercury, cadmium and other toxins. When disposed in landfills, the toxic materials contained in electronics can leach into the ground and water stream, causing damage to individuals, animals and the environment. State and federal governments are continuously working to combat this damage by imposing increasing regulations on the dumping of electronic equipment.
The government imposes an extra precaution on healthcare organizations requiring HIPAA compliancy as a further effort to protect the private and sensitive information contained in hospital records. Health care facilities have an obligation to protect the confidentiality and security of health data.
Should electronics containing medical records, names, addresses, and social security numbers end up in landfills or improperly recycled, patients' security becomes at risk and the hospital faces potential legal repercussions. With large amounts of private information stored at hospitals, health care institutions must exercise extreme diligence in selecting an electronics recycler.
